Posted in Uncategorized at 12:48 pm by Sarah

Reason 1:

Reason 2:

Haoran :P stole all my holiday news and left hardly any for me to report. I assume the majority of pple who read mine. read his… so what’s the point??

However, I shall tick off the following holiday activities that we achieved… Read the rest of this entry »

Holiday at Home

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:49 am by Sarah

Haoran and I are on ‘holiday’ next week i.e. we are not going to work.

However contrary to the traditional concept of ‘holiday’ we are staying at home this time around. And so we are making a list of things that we would like to do during our week off. Things we wouldn’t normally do, or get to do.

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to add to our list. It could be something unusual, or something you enjoy, or something you would never do yourself.

We’ll see how many we can do in a week and I’ll blog it all out.

Have fun!

Stuff happened…

Last week did not get any less weird… although I started to feel better and better about my new position. I did realise that it was an answer to prayer – considering I will be supporting Haoran next year as he does MTS. And it’s kinda nice to finally feel at home.. at work. I now have elaborate plans to personalise my desk.. and perhaps bring in my own cup and Tea Centre tea leaves. I also got to move desks today which means I have a small view of the water… which is quite nice. :)

I must make mention of Saturday’s proceedings. Lorien, Mary and I were bereft of our husbands for a large part of the day and so decided (on Mary’s suggestion) to go for a walk. The walk from Coogee was pleasant, interesting and quite scenic. The weather was gorgeous and even the blustery breeze that you normally get at the beach was absent. We arrived at Bondi… watch the surfers surfing… did a bit of shopping and had some yummy breakfast foods for lunch. I had french toast with apple and berry ‘compote’ and lovely maple syrup while Lorien had a giant omelette, and Mary, a vegetarian brekky plate.

About half-way back I realised that I was definately not as fit as I thought I was. Shortly after that I kicked myself for not getting around to buying proper walking shoes. We were all exhausted by the time we returned.. (we spent a few minutes panicking that the car had been stolen/towed before we realised we’d parked it a few blocks further than we thought). We’d just got back to the apartment and flopped, when the boys got back.

I’m still paying the price… people keep looking at me funny as I limp around the office…

Hiring and Firing

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:04 pm by Sarah

I had the weirdest day yesterday.

I came back from lunch to find one of my workmates in hysterical tears. She had been fired within her 3 month probation period. It sucked. I really liked her and we had heaps of fun together.

After she left, I sat at my desk fuming over the insensitivity of business and how inhuman it all is. I also wondered who the new girl would be and thought about how I had to start making friends with yet another new person in my department.

Then the HR lady and my boss called me into their office and I suddenly realised… I was the new girl. Now I have a confirmed full-time position as of 1st September with all the benefits and perks. Yay!… right?

I didn’t really feel much like celebrating… Lucy had a good analogy: it’s like being on the receiving end of an organ transplant. It’s a good thing.. but someone has to die first.

To quote ‘You’ve Got Mail’…. ‘It’s not personal, it’s business. ‘

Well… I thought it was appropriate..

Drip…

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:50 pm by Sarah

It’s storming outside. That storm caused a yukky traffic jam which I was stuck in for two hours this morning. It also caused me to get very wet as I struggled to get the umbrella out of the boot. And I’m sure somehow it was the cause of us sleeping in way past anything resembling our normal wake up time…. grumble grumble grumble…

Anyway, being inspiried by a few other blogs, and the fact that I’m attending a ‘Music Appreciation Night’ tonight.. I think this post might be my take on music..

I should explain that I come from sort of a weird musical heritage: my parents hardly ever played music.. ever. No music in the car meant my sisters and I had to re-create school musicals and Rodgers and Hammerstein in the back seat to keep ourselves amused. The only time my parents would ever play music in the house was when we had people over for dinner – then the ‘dinner music’ tape came out .

My sister was really the music pioneer in our family. She started playing the radio in the room.. first it was ‘Rok FM’ the daggiest local radio station ever… then later on it was Triple JJJ. And she’s always had a much better CD collection than me.

I guess what I’m saying is that sitting down and listening to music doesn’t come naturally to me. I don’t think to put on music while I’m doing something. Even if I did, it would take me 10 or so minutes to figure out what I wanted to listen to.. if I didn’t give up first.

Now, as of this year my CD collection has grown by 3 or 4 hundred :) . And I can’t avoid it… there it all is… so much to listen to, so little time. And every trip to JB HiFi means there might be even more..

The other thing is that I have obsessive attitude to music – once I find something I like I’ll play it over and over until I’m thoroughly sick of it. In this way, I played Death Cab for Cutie to death. Now I avoid playing CD’s in the car and listen to the radio instead. This means I get variety and I hear new music before Haoran does :) (sometimes)..

The latest addition to the collection is Sufjan Stevens ‘Avalanche’ which is basically the songs that didn’t get on ‘Come on, Hear the Illinoise’ which is ok once you get past the 20 versions of ‘Chicago’…. Â
